Why do sweaters and other woolen materials smell after a wash?

When i wash my sweaters i have to wait several days for that sweater smell to get out before i can wear them. I was told stuff like the water temperature and wringing them is the cause but it didnt help when i dipped them in cold water then let them drip dry. So whats the cause and is there a way of preventing this or making the smell go away quicker?
